A Typical Day at the Cottage

I feel incredibly blessed to share these stories with you, especially considering the rocky start to my life. Born prematurely, I was so tiny I could fit in a shoebox, and my health was precarious. The hospital doctors were at a loss, and my mom, with her unwavering courage, was advised by her doctor to take me home if she wanted to save me. Faced with daunting release forms that held her accountable for my life, she bravely signed them and brought me home. With the wisdom of her elders and her mother, and the common practice of using plant medicine at the time, she nursed me back to health. I owe my life to her strength and courage. Rest in peace, Mom.

Now, let me take you to the heart of my cherished memories—the cottage.

Sleeping at the cottage was a dream. The air was crisp and fresh, our stomachs were content, and we were blissfully tired from the day's adventures. Our parents, often busy with their own tasks—Dad fixing things and Mom cooking—gave us the freedom to explore and create our own fun.

Mornings started with the simple pleasure of cereal and toast cooked over a wood stove. The toaster, a triangular contraption, worked its magic, and the taste of butter melting into jam or peanut butter was pure bliss. With no electricity or devices, the forest and the lake were our playground. After breakfast, we'd wash up in the lake, always under the watchful eye of my older sister or Dad, as Mom was fearful of water. (She did eventually learn to swim in her 70s!)

Some days, we'd journey to the farm on the other lake to collect a massive ice block for our icebox, our makeshift fridge. A treat awaited us in the form of a 10-cent allowance for penny candy, each piece savored slowly from a brown paper bag.

Our days were filled with building forts, observing insects, fishing, and swimming. When Mom called us for lunch, we devoured our simple meals, knowing we had to wait an hour before swimming again to avoid cramps.

Dad, ever resourceful, built us a rowboat from plywood, nails, and glue. It was heavy and cumbersome, but it was our pride and joy. Watching it float for the first time was exhilarating. We spent countless hours fishing and diving off that boat. I vividly recall a late-night fishing adventure with my sister, where a massive muskie leaped beside our boat. My sister, convinced she knew its lair, had me rowing all over the lake, only to return home exhausted. That muskie would have snapped our 20 lb fishing line with ease!

Evenings often ended with a bonfire and roasted marshmallows, or if not, cinnamon toast with butter and a glass of milk before bed.

Our summers were brimming with joy and excitement, and we never wanted them to end. We even visited Montreal for Expo 67, a monumental experience. My parents saved diligently to take us, driving back and forth over two days with homemade meals. Despite everything, we always felt rich and never lacked anything.

We were enveloped in love, knowing that no matter our mischief, home was a place of acceptance. Sure, there were consequences, but they were worth it. I often pushed boundaries, yet my parents were always there with open arms, assuring me it was okay.

In closing, the cottage, the lake, the forest, and the simple life without electricity or running water were our sanctuary, our castle.

One unforgettable night, I encountered a bobcat while at the outhouse. Terrified, I shut the door and waited until my dad came to check on me. Hearing his voice, I felt safe, knowing he could protect me from anything.

Conclusion

Reflecting on these summers, I realize how they have been instrumental in shaping my journey with Eh Canadian Peace™.
